Blues music is steeped with tradition. To be
born into a family where the environment is conducive to carrying on this tradition is a
wonderful situation. Ronnie Baker Brooks is a perfect example; the son of Blues great
Lonnie Brooks. Indeed, "Make These Blues Survive" addresses legacy, while
featuring Lonnie cranking out a solo that will leave you with a grin from ear to ear!
Brooks bares his soul, singing with conviction--succeeding in converting listening into an
emotional experience.
The title track gets right down to business.
"Where Do I Stand In Line" is a song that leaves you with a lump in your throat
and sounds very Clapton-ish. You can almost see him grimace in the studio. "Love
Rebound" and "Stuck in Stupid" feature his almost effortless,
fleet-fingered guitar work that he masters so well. In fact, while listening to this disc
a few times, I quickly realized that the songs "Bald Headed Woman" and "You
Make Me Feel So Good" are very faithful to the intensity of his live club dates,
complete with the influences of Stevie Ray Vaughan and Elvin Bishop sifting through.
"Ill See You Again" is the acoustic finale that bows out gently, but
firmly. Summed up, Golddigger is a well-crafted collection of self-penned songs
that feature great vocals and first-rate musicianship.
