A List Server (Listserv) is
an efficient method of transmitting hundreds, or thousands of Email
messages to a list of Email addresses. List Servers are
administered, or managed, by the owner using Email, and can be
configured in a variety of ways to serve a variety of needs ranging
from newsletters to Email discussion groups.
Key Features
- Remotely Manageable
Whether your List Server is open to all, or closed to subscribers
only; and whether or it's unmediated or moderated you will control
it. You can change it whenever you want using e-mail.
- Password Protected
To make changes to your list such as removing unwanted or unused
addresses, or to view the entire list, or any other administrative
function (including posting to a moderated list) you will need to
send the request from the administrative account, and use a
password. This means your list is secure.
- Majordomo Software
Win.Net uses the industry standard for List Server's: majordomo.
- Industrial Strength
No Email package is setup to handle large lists like a List
Server. With a List Server the other subscribers addresses are
kept private. Postings do not include the addresses on the list,
and there is no limit to the number of subscribers that can be
handled.
Start an Advertising Based
Newsletter
This would be an "open/moderated"
List Server allowing anyone to subscribe themselves, but only the
owner can post a message to the group. There are a few of these in
operation right now. They make their money by providing a useful
piece of information to folks who subscribe to the List Server for
free. Advertisers are eager to pay the List Server owners because
they can reach thousands of readers for much less than the cost of
direct mail.
Start a Subscription Based
Newsletter
This would be a "closed/moderated"
List Server which means only the owner can add subscribers and only
the owner can post messages to the list. The Internet is a young
industry and a lot of quality information is available for free,
because new entries into the information business have not
established a feasible revenue model. However, as time goes on, the
value of quality information will become apparent as the amount of
junk overwhelms us. Therefore, subscription based newsletter models
(sans the ads) will proliferate just as paper newsletters do today.
Cut Costs by Reaching Your
Customers with an Electronic Newsletter
This type of a List Server could be
configured in many ways. You could keep it open so anyone can learn
about your company, or you could keep it closed so that only true
customers can receive information.
Email addresses are becoming as common as FAX machines. Given that
almost everyone has an address you could save a great deal of money
by sending your messages out using e-mail rather than paper (saves
postage costs, printing costs and the environment : ). If your
costs were reduced to a single monthly costs you could keep your
messages shorter, more to the point, and send them more frequently.
You can even use it as a point to your web site.
Pricing - $25 per month; includes 100 Mb of
transfers, it's 5 cents per MB thereafter
Name of List Server - Fixed (cannot be changed by
owner after setup)
The name needs to be 16 characters or less and should start with a
letter. Use only lowercase letters, numbers and dashes in the
name. It should also be unique to the mail system on Win.Net. If
you use your domain name, or system name coupled with "-l" (dash
followed by the letter L) this will usually ensure uniqueness.
There is a net convention of ending mail list addresses with a "-l"
(such as example-l@lists.win.net), though this is not a requirement.
Owner/Approval Address - Fixed
This is the Email address from which the list must be administered.
The combination of this address and the password must be used to
make administrative changes to the list, thus acting as a double
security standard.
